Cologne collective HOOVE make a welcome return to the fore with their latest release. It’s been a little while since we heard from the from the label and certain details have changed during the hiatus. This next one formalises a new direction, after the artist behind the platform changed his moniker. Kolter makes this his first output, an artist formerly known as DJOKO.
Partly to avoid confusion with other similar artist names, partly to make a more personal connection with the music. Whatever his reasons, Johannes Kolter took a new focus and he has since been building a catalogue of new proofs. He’s been all over London label Pilot, building a bunch of releases in the background, including his own Between Fragments LP. From chillout, breaks, futuristic synth and spaced out basslines, this blend of flavours played an important part in carving out a new sound.
Now Kolter brings his attention back to his own, joined by a bunch of label favourites. Serving up the opening track, ‘U Make Me Feel’ is a funk fuelled groover, hitting hard with a poignant bassline beneath a blend of hearty melodies. Electro beat bops textured rhythms, feeding warm pads that dish out a tasteful tune above.
Primely placed build ups see the sub stripped, driving energy into powerful but pleasant drops. This infectious concoction of luscious synth, big beat and contented vocal brings together a more than dance worthy track. One that is made to bring the dancefloor to light.
The EP is titled “WATT FOTT ES, ES FOTT” meaning “what’s gone is gone” in colonial slang. It offers an optimistic outlook on what is to come. Focusing less on the past and signalling a new direction for the label’s future. We like where it’s going…
