Chippy Chasers return with another bag of low-slung groovers from regular face Fedo. Having starred in the previous edition, which arrived by way of a VA showcase, Fedo navigates four expressions in his solo EP for the Dutch-based imprint.
We take aim at A1 “Sin Titulo” as the modular machines at his disposal expel all manner of otherworldly sounds and tones. The glitchy grooves are stitched together with the sticky bassline that perfectly underpins the track to great effect. The whispered vocal also adds a darker dimension to proceedings that is, in turn, brightened up somewhat by the jaunty synth line.
Moving onto the second of Fedo’s originals is EP title track “Calisthenics & Coffee”, dialling up the punch somewhat, he turns in a moody, rhythm-packed bomb that perfectly captures the magic moment around dusk when the sky turns from orange to purple before dimming to black. The subtly repeating bell synths, waning pads, and reverberating vocals edge the ears and mind into night mode with a calm ease that almost makes you forget that this has powerful basslines and beats under the hood.
Flipping over and this theme is nicely carried over to side B, where we find the jazzy piano licks of “Film Noir”. Detuned synth stabs slide between the beats like dripping paint that has been cast across a canvas, while the crunchy grooves continue to provide those eyes-closed head-nodding vibes. We finish our trip through the mind of Fedo with “My Weapon”, and he finishes strong with more minimal grooves paired with stunning electronics. The use of delay is so on point here, as each track element effortlessly melts into the next. This is also a well-honed skill that Fedo utilises on the whole EP, and the sounds he carves out are very impressive.
