We at Trommel really love Ethel. Skilled DJ – check her recent podcast for our series. Great producer – with her appearance in our last year’s top-100 selection (and there was a huge debate about what track we should use). Lovely person – our “Rising Stars” feature about her easily goes to show this. And, after today’s premiere, we hope, you are going to love her a bit more too. So, Ethel, E.N.E., Laik Records – here we go!
The A-side of this 12” will be dedicated to Ethel in full. The B-side contains her duo with Elliot. And both their sounds are totally different. Our today’s “Lipstick On A Gorilla” seems to be a very energetic tool. With its strong, marching, and catwalk rhythmic sometimes it feels like a step into the EBM territory. The voice shouts in the background, being very gentle, but still impactful, are making that feeling even stronger. If someone from Libertine is reading this right now – please pay attention to Ethel in the future.
The A1 neighbor “Radio Neukoln”, changes these voice shouts to some female melodic cuts and male talk, but everything else sounds very similar. Same catwalk tempo, but, slightly more interesting bassline melody here.
“And now – something completely different” (always wanted to quote this here). From the very first second of the B-side, we’re going to hear some broken beat takes. “Mimosa” is perfectly balanced between electro and break motives. And “Guns And Lines” just adds the extra beat to all those missing spots (and a pinch of trancey vibe too).
It can be just a feeling of mine, but this release in its microelements (especially those talks on the background) and the whole mood sounds very close to Ethel’s release on RA+RE. Great to hear that her style of producing is formed so quick.
So, hurry up. Laik Records’ Bandcamp and regular stores like Juno, Deejay, or Redeye are ready and waiting.
