French artist D’Julz has since his game-changing label Bass Culture started back in 2009 been at the fore of high-quality house music. Late last year the Frenchman created a new vinyl-only project JV Recordings that is designed to propel his own mesmerizing productions in a new direction. With the first EP ‘Chaplin’s Bong’ coming in October 2018 and selling out in no time at all it is now time for the second release of the series to be added to D’Julz’s already impressive discography.
Title track ‘In Progress’ on A1 is dreamy from the off, but the tough kick and rattling percussion adds a much-needed balance to proceedings. The dreamlike state is extended further with deep bass tones, old-school bass chords, and retro gated synth. The overall retro feel of the track is enhanced further with the pair of distorted synths that arrive midway through the track. Moving in a more retro direction for a new project is sometimes a risk, but with D’Julz at the quality of the control is assured and so manages to swerve the associated pitfalls.
On the flip B1 ‘M’ dives deeper into the dream house theme and also comes up trumps. Breakbeats and more old-school bass stabs are joined by lo-fi synth lines and strings that result in a top uplifting track that would surely do great things during early hours or day time sets. Another hit for D’Julz and his unwavering approach to house music in all its forms.
