Premiere: 1 – j.me – The Cause [MF007]

Manchester based producer j:me steps up for the seventh release of London label Modern Funktion.

Drawing inspiration from a myriad of influences ranging from the heavy hitters of SlapFunk to the groove maestros of Apollonia and Gene on Earth, j:me has crafted a sound that is uniquely his own. His seamless blend of house, garage, and everything in-between creates a buzzy atmosphere wherever he performs.

Inspired by the golden era of UKG and deep house from the 90s and early 2000s, this EP is a nostalgic journey through gritty analog sounds, clever sampling and vibrant synth melodies.

Supported by some of the industry’s most respected selectors including Rossko, DJ Senc, and Julian Anthony, j:me’s productions have already made waves in the dance music scene, bringing his contemporary UK flavours to the table.

We zoom into the title track ‘The Cause’, a peak time number flirting between house and garage with a huge Reese bassline and classy chord stabs bringing the vibe. It’s a highly playable tune, laced with lush vocal work and a spacey atmosphere that would keep the dance floor ticking at many moments.

Modern Funktion, the forward-thinking label behind this release is dedicated to building the next generation of dance music. Their commitment to pushing boundaries and supporting emerging artists shines through their extension curation of Bandcamp releases, including the previous EP from Leeds-based producer Joejoemojo.

The EP weaves through a number of moods, from peak time energy to more atmosphere breakbeat explorations like in ‘Dr Skippy’. Each tune has it’s own place in a set, continuing the fine streak of form of j:me – an artist with much more ahead of him, as well as the growing community around Modern Funktion.
