After two successful editions that put the almost abandoned Flemish town Doel on the map, a town that is home to only 18 people nowadays, the festival carrying the same name is now back on track on August 31 with a new edition that is even more promising than their previous ones. This year’s edition has some upgrades, as they crafted and curated a new stage dedicated to live performances – Live by RUIS. A collaboration between Doel Festival and RUIS – an Antwerpian organisation and event dedicated to celebrating underground culture, that we’re eager to discover this year.
With Doel’s population dwindling drastically since the sixties due to its tumultuous history, and the small village being almost a ghost town nowadays, a place where only traces of the past could be seen and one could only imagine what it once was, the festival’s aim goes further than just being a simple music event. Instead, it aims to offer a multisensorial experience where everything – from music to the food provided at the food court, or their arts & crafts market, is equally important. All in the hope of building a community that could create a future for Doel, which may one day regain its vitality and liveliness. It’s a noble cause that we admire, and we hope that one day we will all reap the fruits of this work and enjoy a different Doel, one revived with vibrant alleys full of life.
