Canadian artist Mike Shannon has, along with a tightly woven cast of friends have been steering the futurist strain of house and techno for a long time now. Their brand of robo-funk electronica was minimal before minimal even existed. Through his Cynosure Recordings label Mike and his countrymen and close affiliates that counts artists such as Mathew Jonson, The Mole, Deadbeat, Ernesto Ferreyra, Brett Johnson, Ryan Crosson, and of course long-time studio partner DeWalta.
Having started the year the way they have always played it during their last 20 years journey they held a label showcase at Club Guesthouse where Ernesto Ferreyra, Mike Shannon, Ohm Hourani, and Herck gave Romania the full Cynosure treatment. With the labels’ roots coming from New Berlin in Canada the label soon shifted to Berlin, Germany and this has been its home for some time now. So, when the crew were devising the recent 20-year stream it was almost poetic to hold the event at the mall area in Berlin that used to be Tresor’s garden area which perfectly shows just how much Berlin has changed over the years. Featuring the crème de la crème of the label in Mathew Jonson and The Mole live, Deadbeat and of course Mike Shannon the passing Berlin shoppers were treated to an unreal public label showcase.
For those that caught the live stream, they will have spotted a clutch of tracks that feature on the labels sprawling anniversary various artist album. The digital version which is now available via the label’s Bandcamp page features the full 20 track experience while the double 12” release features 6 of the labels nearest and dearest friends. More than in keeping with the labels’ ethos of unique and often weird melodies, funky basslines, and forward-thinking track ideas. This has what has kept Mike Shannon and Cynosure in the game thus far and this release is a timely reminder of why this label, Mike Shannon, and the artists that he orbits are still huge in the game considering the massive amount of “game minutes” that they have racked up and continue to add to.
