The Laylla Dane curated Wake Up Stran-Jah is much more than a festival. It is a full body and mind experience that takes place each year at Varvara, a stunning corner of the Black Sea’s coast. What began as a small gathering has since grown to become one of the region’s most influential platforms for electronic music. The beach side location is the scene for a full three days of fist pumping action as well as the opportunity to cleanse the mind and nourish the soul. Taking place across the weekend 11-14th August one of Bulgaria’s hidden gems has much to offer the discerning dancer.
One of the most valued elements of the whole experience is the location. The sandy dunes of Varvara Beach offer one of the most stunning backdrops to be found on the festival circuit. The adventure begins by getting to the festival site. As there are no cabs in Varvara the trip starts on the dusty road that leads to the action. For those not wishing to two step it to the site there will be a shuttle bus on hand. Once there, you will find a hedonistic retreat that will match the energy of any high-powered rave. This vista alone is enough to put Bulgaria on the map.
WUS always prides itself on its diverse line-ups from around the region and wide arching sound that covers leftfield gems from Emil Doesn’t Drive, the b2b pairing of scene veterans Bosha and Stephan Panev, the longstanding influences of Vladimir Ivkovic, festival regulars Slavi Peev, Mario Milev, Strfan Alexandrov (this time under the moniker of Escape Route with his partner in crime J-Lost), China-based Bulgarian Manasyt, Clipper, Slavi Peev, Kiril Dimchev, Factuaw, the rising Raya, festival debutant Grigor Kanev, and the fantastically named Puma & The Dolphin will all be joining festival’s driving force Laylla Dane.
To give Wake Up Stran-Jah an international slant there is always certifiable stars making appearances and their 11th edition is no different. Faciendo Soundsystem member and one of our scenes most avid collectors Desyn will be making the trip to the Bulgarian seaside armed with all manner of gems ready to unleash on this beachside party. Art of Dark regular and all round treasure Carl H will also be making the trip to Varvara where he will be adding his personal touch to proceedings. Making the Funktion One system boom will also be Argentinian DJ Teeth, Egyptian artist Zeina, and TPR.
