There are very few labels with a catalogue as consistently appealing as Switzerland’s RORA. Formed in 2011 by Romar and Ravzan, the vinyl-only imprint has established itself as one of the scene’s most respected outputs. Every record has a unique and refined sound, attributable to the artists who distinguish each release withtheir unique own moods and textures. Now onto their 18threlease, RORA welcomes IULY.B to the family, with the much anticipated Systematic EP.
One of Romania’s fastest rising talents, IULY.B’s sound is marked by his deeper sensibilities, manifesting in tender soundscapesand enchanting melodies. His latest record is an exquisite display of this stylistic approach, featuring three pristinely produced cuts that are cathartic and body-moving at once.
The A1 and title-track, Systematic, immediately packs a punch. With a low-end that is filled with momentum, there is no doubt that IULY.B has an expert’s grasp of what gets people on the floor. Of course, functionality is only one dimension. Accordingly, the track’s growling bassline is matched with considered percussion that elevates the track to an introspective affair.
On the A2, Eletrix takes a glitchier approach. Its crisp drums and cosmic-infused high-end is streamlined by an alluring melody and synth-lines that create a consistently ascending tension. Each element in the track’s arrangement accumulates drive, ideal for building or transforming the energy of a DJ set.
Rounding out the record, the aptly titled Motion Layers has all the hallmarks of a memorable tune. Like many of IULY.B’s immaculate productions, the mood is ambiguous: melancholic and euphoric at once. A classy bassline creates an instant groove that slinks below its spaced-out pads and poignant atmospherics. As sounds wax and wane, the track invites total surrender. The emotive potential of this track can’t be overstated: played at the right time Motion Layers is a weapon.
This is a record where each track holds its own. With early support from Priku and Cristi Cons, the Systematic EP is a must have for minimal-minded selectors.
