Having recently brought you news of the colourful world of Comic’s Trip via there weekend long rave across two venues we thought it was time to introduce their label properly. Having already released the first EP back in April of last year Comic’s Trip returns with one of their closely regarded artists S.S.D.
The work of four artists Eliott Roux, Vincent Welwert, Julien Timsit, and Nicolas Timsit journeys into a kind of future past universe where nothing but massive basslines and retro synths exist. This is just fine by us.
For the purposes of this review we have elected to showcase the most upbeat of all the tracks on the release ‘Voice of Hope’. Lets be clear that its not just a case of being upbeat this track is an absolute bomb. A deep thunderous kick and offbeat zaps leads into an acidic wiggle centric synthline and almighty bassline that grabs the track by the balls. Lighter than air synth notes playfully dance across the top of the mix and more magic is sprinkled on top until the track takes a bit of a left-hand turn. Ravey stabs and retro decoded vocals announce the turning of the track in a more peak time direction and if not careful the strength of this part of the track could catch some of guard.
Heading back to the beginning of the release and ‘Introspection’ gives the rest of the EP some context. The spacey influences begin here and the soaring pads and crystalline synths really set the tone and theme for what comes later. This slow-mo jam gives a perfect starting point from which to warm up the machines that will be the main focus later in the EP. ‘Tellen’ utilises more of these retro leaning synth sounds to great use and couples them with some very nice breaks and vocal clips.
Moving past more chilled out sounds of the first part of the EP and ‘100 Steps’ edges into more dancefloor orientated regions and a phat acid bassline works its magic as well some old skool break beats. The influences that rave, acid house and old skool techno have on S.S.D. is obvious but is certainly no copy, paste duplicate exercise as the four artists have put a lot of time and effort into the emulation they have produced here. Rounding out a really quite fantastic release is ‘Rubiano’ and again breaks are the order of the day but there is also a number of other nods here too. Shades of St Germain, Alex Gopher and Superdiscount all come through and to our mind that is always a bonus.
