NYC crew Decatur are well known in the party scene and have had some top events in their time with artists such as The Ghost, Vera, Quest and Valentino Kanzyani all guesting. With these obvious chops in the music biz it was high time to progress their journey to include a vinyl record label too.
Helping them make the jump is unknown artist Lucho who turns in four forward-thinking house cuts. With one eye on the future and another firmly on the past genres that made this music possible the Connecticut artist’s ‘New In Town’ EP bangs from the first beat to the last.
The early house vibes are strong on B1 banger ‘Space Tunic’ and the deep b line commands attention as soon as it is unfurled into place. The snappy percussion cuts straight through the mix and in no time at all the dancefloor pressure is through the roof. The addition of the forlorn dreamy bell synths is a smart move is the deep nasty bassline rolls underneath so the track never loses pace.
Moving to the rest of the EP and the analogue house grooves continue. The leftfield sound palette certainly does hark back to proto house period but with a modern dancefloor slant. ‘Kongie’ slaps the face with a bendy bassline and skipping percussion while ‘Built-in Rewind’ notches up the pressure with deeper, grinding bass tones. Rounding out the EP is ‘Forest Spirits’ which is a more subdued breakbeat version of the theme that Lucho has done a great job of working into the EP. Almost beatless the softened off-beat kicks just put more focus on the fluted synths and percussion.
You will be able to grab Lucho’s ‘New In Town’ Ep on Decatur Records via subwax shortly.
