Tanzform are on a winning hot streak at the moment and no mistaking. Having already launched several brand new labels across the house music spectrum, they now deliver an upfront imprint that aims to cut through the BS and head straight for the jugular every time. The debut release on Insectoid Audio comes courtesy of the mysterious DJ Scyther with only a Pokemon stamp as a form of identification.
With dials set to maximum, we launch into our look at XX001 with DJ Scyther’s “Voltage Controle” and there is no doubt which mood this release and indeed the whole EP series is aimed at. Made for the floor, the upfront kicks and simplified bassline that undulates along with the stripped back percussion. Everything about this track is taken right back to its fundamentals for maximum impact on the dancefloor and this is a running theme that pays dividends through the EP. Completing side B is the aptly titled “Deedexter (Snare Roll Mix)” as it features the dastardly plans from the well known animated kid doctor. The rave leaning arpeggiating bassline cuts a mean figure across the track with accompanying reduced bit rate synths present a darker side to the release.
Flipping back over to side A and “Downloaded Brain” acts as the catalyst for the overall vibe for the EP. Unprocessed percussion hits drop like hot lead on the track producing a functional yet impactful weapon for the peak times and the deep bass bin destroying bass tones are just as devastating. Rounding out the EP is “#Notafreek” and while there is most definitely a bit of tongue in cheek humour at play as this is most definitely a freak of a track. Filtered percussion, and a wicked bassline certainly bely the vocals insisting that the track is not a freak, we beg to differ. For no nonsense peak time bangers, it would seem that DJ Scyther and Insectoid Audio has all these elements covered. A new buy on sight label has entered the game.
