Premiere: A2 – Toobin’ – Heavy [ZUMU001]

Leading the way in a new breed of Amsterdam based minimal is agency and newly minted label Minimarizumu. Having added several artists to their growing stable of artists they have brought on board Amsterdam duo Toobin’ who have in turn delivered the imprints first EP.

Pick of the EP is angular A2 track ‘Heavy’ which revolves around a robotic synth line that tightly winds itself around the rolling drum beats. Accompanying the modular synth jam is some neat percussive programming and some finely balanced layered atmospheric elements that make up a well-rounded sound palette.

On the whole, the 4-track ‘De-Droid’ EP features a great collection of funky basslines, finely tuned musical moments, and cosmic sound effects. Backtracking to the title track ‘De-Droid’ and it offers a perfect example of pre-mentioned basslines that dives right into groovy minimal territory.

Third track on the release ‘Ai’ is a more low slung affair with just the right amount of 303 popping in and out of view alongside the contrasting pads. Completing the release is ‘They’re Up To Something’ and also edges along similar ground to that of ‘Ai’ in regards to the more subdued and slinky vibe that it follows. Bubbling along the EP closer nicely rounds out what is a solid release for this fledgling label and hints at some new talent that will surely be making waves in the Amsterdam scene once the city is back to full strength.
