Premiere: A2 – Rinaldo Makaj – Reverse [432-002]

Label curator and head honcho Rinaldo Makaj returns to vinyl only business with 432HERTZ Berlin and has an even more expansive record in store. Joining him on this acid-tinged journey is Dan Piu, Electric City, Gela, Mathi, and Gianluca Pellerano.

We begin our review of 432-002 with bossman Rinaldo Makaj’s latest weapon “Reverse”. The stripped back grooves and room shaking snare and claps have more than the desired effect on the dynamics of the track but it is the 303 bassline that shines here. A no-nonsense club tool that exists only to blow up dancefloors and we can confirm that it has already done so for the likes of Raresh, John Dimas, and Massimiliano Pagliara who has already given “Reverse” an airing at none other than Berghain.

Next up is Electric City and “TAR 1000”, with lashing of squiggly acid and more than a few tones of electro the relatively short run time is used to its fullest. The lush pads are a welcome interlude from the thudding beats, but this only helps to intensify the trip. Completing side A is maestro Dan Piu with record opener “Cocnitive Dissonance” and with his expertise in electro moods being beyond reproach, he squeezes out all manner of ethereal sounds from his collection hardware. Leaning heavily on a repeating acid line that is supported by a dragging drum beat that only further enhances the creepy atmospheres he has created.

Flipping over to side B and Gela continues down the peak time electro route with “Drop The Bass”. Robust robotic beats lead out the action and the sinister bassline that is underpinned by an equally menacing synth pad. Mathi is next on the track with “Pressure” and the track name could not be more apt. Swirling synth pads revolve around a growling bassline that paints a dark picture, but one that would pierce even the darkest of glooms. With a brief lull in the action via a mean spoken word the beats come crashing back into view before long. Completing another compelling edition we have the swan song “Functionality” from Gianluca Pellerano and keeping perhaps the most emotive track for last. Effected vocals combine with a reduced groove in order to dial up the intensity even further.
