Having been active since 2010, long running Italian imprint Amam returns with a new EP. Taking the reins for this edition is label founder Alessio Mereu under his mrelss alias. Providing four original cuts, Amam maintains their high bar of quality with “Shard of the 88th Cycle” EP.
Kicking off with A2 “Season of Reason“ and the roomy percussive loop sets the tone perfectly. Shortly after tidy vocal snips are introduced alongside succinct hi hats and lush pads. Tumbled bleepy synths roll into view together with a deep thudding off beat groove that harks back to a golden age in minimal techno. Side A is completed by “Lurking Spasms”, a more upfront cut but nonetheless atmospheric and impactful.
Flipping over to side B and mrelss brings a percussive heavy workout that also draws inspiration from the rattling minimal grooves of the early 2000s. Melding lust soundscapes and next level drum programming is evidently a superpower as the grooves easily intertwine with the hypnotic synth work. Completing this excellent package is “SMMIFS” which winds mystical moods around skippy rhythms.
