Premiere: A1 – Tom Carruthers – Neutralise [WXC028]

Long running French label Skylax Records returns with a five track EP from Uk hotshot Tom Carruthers. Known for his utterly unmissable Non Stop Rhythm imprint, Tom is on sizzling form on his “Neutralise” EP.

With picking a favourite from this excellent EP being a difficult task, we choose to start from the top with A1 “Neutralise”. As if plucked straight from a sweaty warehouse rave, the verby atmosphere is tempered with a clutch of noisy snares and arping synths. Cutting through the mix unphased by the chaos surrounding it is that unwavering bassline that adds the right amount of character to an otherwise machine based heater.

Next up on side A is the cleaner “Deep North”, while still retaining that MPC rawness the main hook is the satisfyingly grizzled bassline. The detuned basstones seem to dovetail perfectly with the brightness of the percussion. Completing the action for this side is “No More” and being a much more uplifting caveat to a more floor based affair, the singing synths hint at a side of Carruthers’ work that is not solely focused directly at shaking the floor.

Flipping over and we find a pair of more electro leaning entries, first of all is “Pascals” a detuned peak time weapon that should be handled with care. Stripped back for maximum impact, the Italo and Bleep roots are laid bare. Finishing with “Cosmic Ride” Tom Carruthers rounds out a blistering EP with a wigged out tour de force through trancy melodies and blockbusting grooves.
