Premiere: A1 – Sarayu – Rockit 4 [MR009]

More Rice co-founder Sarayu returns to how own label to show us how it’s done. As a result of the fine curation of their label as well as countless club and festival appearances, Sarayu is part of an elite team of Thai artists. They are the lifeblood of their blooming part of Asia and they are in high demand. Back to the music, and we have the ninth edition of More Rice with two originals and two remixes courtesy of O-Well and Mogwaa.

Kicking off with A1 bomb “Rockit 4”, known for his techy peak time style, Sarayu starts his EP the way it should continue with scything percussion that rattles satisfyingly against the robust bassline. Sweeping atmospherics soon begin to circle, announcing the arrival of the eerie synth that filters and oscillates in all the right places for maximum impact in the mix.

Keeping Sarayu’s original works for side A and the remixes for side B, the titular track “Don Vito Bingus” completes side A with a bang. Flanged grooves cut a menacing figure as the kick continues to thud, the pressure created by the sweeping effects builds to fever pitch. The on-beat claps and background bassline give an undeniable OG techno feel that hits the spot.

Flipping over, and first of all, we have the first reworking of “Don Vito Bingus” and O-Well opts for a hardgroove interpretation which seems to fit the source material nicely. The relentless grooves are paired nicely with a dub techno-oriented version of the original that adds great balance to the more upfront side A.

Mogwaa opts to stay closer to the original version but adds in added drama in the form of a repeating bit crushed synth that keeps the upfront nature but with added bite. Reminiscent of 2000s minimal techno
