Premiere: A1 – Margaret Dygas – Butterfly Effect [HB020]

London crew Half Baked are currently on fire in quite a few different ways. Firstly they are fresh off the back of a huge outdoor event at the new East London spot Ldn.east as well as a slew of international collabs with Bloop in Lisbon, CDV in Berlin and of course their OFF Week event in Barcelona. HB are also celebrating turning twenty releases strong and what a release they have lined up. For this special landmark EP they have secured a three track EP from none other than Margaret Dygas. One of headline artists from HB’s OFF Week party and one of our favourite artists here at Trommel Towers, Margaret consistently brings the heat. Be that from behind a set of turntables or from the dials of her studio her ‘Stars Are Only Lights In The Sky’ EP is no exception.

The EP is quite wide ranging and we have opted to pick up the release where else but A1. The utterly hypnotic ‘Butterfly Effect’ is a scintillatingly subtle groover that expands and contracts across the full 9.09-minute run time and we are sure that it is no coincidence the run time amounts to this number. Flanged congas undulate organically under huge amounts of sub bass that envelopes the track but only proves to highlight the discrete changes in the high percussion. Definitely one for the after-hours where sound is paramount as the minute attention to detail is stunning.

Flipping over the Side B and B1 ‘CC is 33’ is a much airier summer tinged bomb. Light pads and synths rebound around the ear while detuned modular elements add a contrast to the sweet side of the track. Slower in BPM B1 will sounds just as good at 0 pitch as it does +8. Completing the milestone EP is ‘Subliminal 20A7’ and the painstaking work on injecting just the right amount of swing and movement into the drums and percussive elements can perhaps be taken for granted given just how deftly it is applied. It has been a minute since we have seen a solo EP from Margaret and with both hers and Half Baked huge summer plans currently downloading this again pin points why she is so revered as an artist.

If you are heading to Barcelona you will be able to catch Marget Dygas alongside Sonja Moonear, Robin Ordell and Sam Bangurra.
