The long running Memento Records returns with their 55th release and previously many artists have found a home on Idriss D’s co-founded imprint. For the occasion of MEMENTO055, we are treated to four very different cuts from DJ Rame.
Taking aim at firstly at the titular track “Life 3” and at first listen this seems to be a piano track but once this has bedded down a new direction emerges from the depths of the track. The crispy percussion welcomes an impressive melding of styles that begins with the wapping bass tones and continues with breaky percussion and a real euphoric sense of direction.
Moving on to “Toyholic” and leading in with a string pad, this soon gives way to metallic percussion, a mean bassline, and room shaking breakbeats. In a similar vein to “Life 3” and the rest of the EP, there are a lot of different sonic elements to each track, but this is never to the detriment of the track clarity such is the calibre of the mixing.
Flipping over to side B and “Niwa” harks back to a simpler time in dance music where the good times used to roll and politics didn’t seem to have as much bearing on being able to have a good time. Being able to transport sound back and forth in time is a skill DJ Rame clearly has mastered. This is further explained with the synth pads and talking, gatey synths and the filtering 303.
Rounding out this fine EP from DJ Rame and the Memento Records team is “Stone Garden”. Breakbeats lead out the action but are soon followed up with a 4/4 kick that ties all the retro synth elements together. As euphoric as it is nostalgic, but in a more updated fashion, Memento Records have always dealt purely with timeless music and this EP will most assuredly stand the test of time.
