Premiere: 1 – Simmo – Freakquency [OBP004]

Fresh from starring at the recent Hide & Seek Festival and with a slew of dates incoming, Simmo appears on OBP with a five track EP. With there already being three editions of OBP already under their belts it is time for the fourth and it comes from OBP resident Simmo. Featuring four original works by the man himself and reworking from Yugwan there is all manner of bass heavy garage tinged house to choose from here.

We pick up the release at the very top and the EP title track “Freakquency” sits rightfully at the head of the table. Skipping percussion dances playfully around the sonic field while way below the sub bass tones unleash all manner of speaker (and dancefloor) destroying frequencies. Recalling a heady time in House where UKG was ushered into this world and this little number does the sound justice.

Moving onto “Jungle Jam” and it is in a similar vein when it comes to outrageous basslines, but this is a different best entirely. The percussion fills are perfectly programmed to fall amongst the scratch work, and just when the drop is imminent the track switches up to reveal another side.

Next is “Helter Skelter” and the bumpy bass work is joined by scything hats, more excellent perc fills, and an emerging acid synth that adds even more attitude to an already boisterous EP. Yugwan also takes control of of “Helter Skelter” where he dubs things out to a riddim packed twilight adventure. Completing the ride is the atmospheric “Dub Drive” but what it lacks in upfront musicality it more than makes up for in vibe courtesy of the waves of sub bass that washes over the track.

OBP004 from Simmo is now available to pre-order via Beatport.
