With a long and illustrious history in the vinyl realm, Dubøka have hosted the likes of Silat Beksi, Lizz, Mihai Pol, and BRYZ. For the Birmingham crew’s latest digital release adnan (DE) joins the ranks previously populated by Ray Mono, Vincent Casanova, and Vern to name a few. With a firm eye on quality over quantity, Dubøka have chosen to strip back the track count to just a two track EP.
We begin our deep dive with the lead track from the EP and “Secret” and adnan (DE) sets this one up nicely with deeply thudding kicks and the sort of subtle, yet emotive electronics that has become the calling card of Dubøka. It is when the probing sub bass makes an appearance that the action really gets going. Opting for a stripped back approach to percussion, the fizzing hi hats really cut through the mix and give plenty of room for the waning pads to bloom into full view. Like a fine mist enveloping the track, the swirling synths are joined by a crunchy guitar like motif that paints an ethereal picture.
The second track on the release “Silvering” treads a similar route but takes the instrumental elements and warps them around a metallic body that bends them into shape. Again, the percussion is set to a minimum but with plenty of swing and shuffle to enhance the mysterious shroud of synths and pads. The gloomy nature of the track is the perfect contrast to “Secrets” and offers a snapshot of just what adnan (DE) is capable of in a two track succinct package. Keep your eye on future Dubøka releases as they continue to progress the minimal sound that they have championed since the beginning of their journey.
