Readers of these very pages will be very familiar with Romanian artist Sepp. It may be his incendiary sets at Sunwaves, the releases from his co-run label UVAR alongside Nu Zau, but it is likely the hit after hit that he drops on some of the best labels in the business.
It is the latter that we are discussing today and his extended EP on PRAETORIUM where he delivers a 6 track EP under his new pseudonym Seppsilvestri that tells the story of intergalactic space travel where our civilisation finds a new home on a distant planet. We are sure that even on this distant planet they will have heard of Sepp.
Followers of Sepp will be well versed in his melodic yet intricately crafted bombs that are the staple of the finest artists but for his new alias Seppsilvestri there is a slight detour on the cards. ‘A New Land’ is a bit of a departure from his usual groove led direction but this is definitely not a bad thing. The combination of arpeggiated bassline and elongated flute notes conjure up an after the after afters vibe that slowly builds throughout the track. With barely an obvious consecutive kick drum to speak of the ambient atmosphere of ‘A New Land’ speaks directly to the narrative of the back story of distant space travel.
In a similar mode to ‘A New Land’ the remainder of the EP explores new ground both physically and metaphorically. ‘Beyond The Portal’ offers more punch with sweeping soundscapes, vocal washes, and gated synth clips. ‘Ready For Landing’ easily soundtracks the moments imminently before touching down on an alien locale while ‘Searching The Area’, ‘Knowing Eachother and finally ‘We’ll Live Together’ tell the progressing story of what lies ahead for the founders of this far removed civilisation.
Sepp’s skill in producing deft melodies and punchy grooves is evident but it is clear from even just one listen of this EP proves that there is more to hear from Sepp than just club bangers.
‘The Searching’ EP from Seppsilvestri is available from all good record stores soon.
