Premiere: B1 – Derral – State Of Mind [OCD007]

The O.C.D. (Open Channel for Dreamers) label is ready with the seventh release in their main series. Keeping themselves a little bit off the radars, they’re still providing great records consislently with names, like Alex Picone, Luca Piermattei or Ballet Mechanique. So, if you are still not familiar with their main or “Secret Sun” series – it’s time to change it right now.

“Young, fresh and very talented gentleman from the outskirts of Barcelona”, called Derral is our main focus for today. And his opener of the b-side of this record would be our premiere here.

I was very excited, when my eyes found the combinations “UMM” and “MBG” in the description of this record, and after the record started to play, the excitement at least doubled. Close your eyes – and you are in the beginning of the 90s, dancing in the middle of some Italian club, where some DJ, called, let’s say “Claudio Coccoluto” is playing them in his set. Still, the homage isn’t that blind, but the mood is transmitted perfectly. All the tracks on the record are great and the only reason, “State Of Mind” was picked for the premiere at Trommel – I’m still ready to sell my soul for the great dose of scratches in the track – and in this one they are inserted perfectly. The only thing, that slightly disappoints me – there’s only 4 minutes of it, and this is one of those tracks, that you would like to have at least double the amount.

Now – to the others. The opener, called “Deep Mysteries”, actually tells you everything by its name – it’s a really deep and kinda mysterious house track with a great piece of breaksy percussion inside. And that rewind on 3:01 – you probably know the reason why the record was transferred into my cart, right? “Tree Man” with its piano chords and a portion of bleeps at the beginning reminded me “Sputnik Of Light” by New Composers. But, from the second minute it goes more to the house side, leaving the bleeps aside (and you know what? – we’ll have more scratches!). The last and the chilliest one here “Freedom” leaves us with a great example of an afterhours track, that could be produced in the 90s, but was… not so long ago.

The record should be out very soon, but you still have time to make your pre-orders at Juno, Deejay, Decks, Small Black Dots or wherever you are buying your wax.
