Premiere: A1 – Plusculaar – The Feed [MEM062]

For the 62nd release on Memoria Recordings, Romanian producer Plusculaar delivers a hypnotic set of deep cuts that stay true to the label’s long-standing taste for subtle, immersive club music. Known for his minimalist structures and carefully layered atmospheres, Plusculaar continues to favour patience over obvious impact, letting his tracks unfold through detail and movement.

In this premiere, we focus on the A1, ‘The Feed’, a hungry, pulsating club track filled with psychedelic tendencies. It immediately brings back memories of the beloved Waha Festival, hurling rolling rhythms across the hilltops of Romania with that same sense of spacious, open-air hypnosis.

Percussion is buoyant and inventive throughout. Snappy acoustic snares sit against a tightly locked hi-hat pattern, keeping the groove constantly moving while allowing plenty of air between elements. Trippy vocal fragments drift through the arrangement, narrating an inward journey and deepening the immersive feel. Underneath it all, a pulsating bassline does the heavy lifting, working in tandem with large chord stabs that inject bursts of energy without ever breaking the track’s stripped-back essence.

What stands out most is the control. Plusculaar never overcrowds the mix. Every drum hit, vocal phrase and synth accent feels deliberately placed, creating a sense of tension that builds naturally over time. The groove remains steady and hypnotic, but small shifts in texture and filtering keep the track evolving across its 7-minute duration. It is the kind of record that reveals more with each listen, particularly on a proper sound system where the low-end can fully breathe.

The wider EP follows a similar philosophy. Rather than chasing peak-time theatrics, MEM062 explores depth through textural interplay, subtle breaks and low-end depth. The remaining cuts drift between intimate underground functionality and late-night headphone introspection, giving DJs plenty of room to work with while retaining a strong listening appeal outside the club.

The release also marks an impressive milestone for the Dutch imprint. Founded in Breda in 2008, Memoria has spent almost two decades operating at the heart of underground music, growing from its roots in vinyl culture into a respected international distribution and label platform. While many companies have come and gone during that period, Memoria has remained closely connected to the scenes that shaped it, working behind the scenes to help independent labels focus on the music itself.

That longevity is reflected in the catalogue. Sixty-two releases is no small achievement in today’s landscape, particularly while maintaining a clear artistic identity. There is a consistency to the label’s output that mirrors its wider ethos: substance over hype, with a deep understanding of the dancefloor and the culture surrounding it.

“The Feed” fits comfortably within that tradition. Psychedelic but disciplined, energetic but spacious, it captures Plusculaar at his most focused while reinforcing the values that have carried Memoria through nearly two decades of underground music.
