Premiere: A1 – Liou – Dance Planet [AFX002]

Liou brings a fiery weapon to the second release of Athens based label Affix Recordings.

The sounds coming out of Greece continue to find their form through a collective of talented producers amongst Liou and his label partner G.U.S. Their aesthetic falls between the fringes of house and techno, expressing dreamy, blissful states through slick and driving rhythms loaded with character.

Liou’s work has landed on numerous taste making labels pushing this eclectic sound in the likes of Onirik and Pablo Tarno’s Finest Hour, the prolific Secret Society and Leon’s FUTURA imprint. G.U.S also hosts a string of influential releases to his belt for the likes of Elephant Moon and Revolt.

The pair took the plunge onto the vinyl market back in 2020 with the now sold out split EP, both providing two tracks each. Affix Recordings built traction through an organic series of outputs, hosting several showcases around Athens as well as their own radio show.

Resuming the vision, their second release presents a four track various artist EP with Liou, Dj Gus, Anagnostou and Meibe each bringing a unique flavour to the record.

Liou’s sound is distinctly recognisable from the slickest basslines backed by tight, 909-like rhythms loading his music with drive. ‘Dance Planet’ showcases a more optimistic and peak time mood, working a sleazy bassline beneath a wave of innocent bleepy synth notes floating between subtle atmospheres and vocal samples.

The energy of the track tows the line wonderfully between stripped back and up-for-it vibes, you can picture it lifting a party up from the warm up just as much as keeping a never-ending after party ticking over. It’s a sign of fluent and timeless production, sounds and spacious and well balanced, allowing sections to develop without overcomplicating.

Clever, emotive music built for the dance floor. Dj Gus meanders through a blissful acid mood in the emotive ‘Soft Synth’. Melodies intertwine with a buoyant essence that crafts a stunning atmosphere whilst keeping both eyes firmly on the dance floor.

Anagnostou brings the cosmic flavour in his extended cut ‘Moon Percs’. Bouncey, garage-like percussion supplements a menacing bassline frothing with attitude whilst maintaining a low-key vibe. Rhythms develop with a patient and satisfying charm, destined to hypnotise the mind and create unique moments on the dance floor.

Meibe closes the record with a mesmeric progressive weapon. Staying within similar tripped out and pensive moods, a spiralling bassline navigates through a series of slick breakbeat and 4/4 sections whilst steadily building with an ominous flair.
