Premiere: A1 – John Manhard – Jazz Funk Sex [MUIMUI003]

After the success of the second edition of London based imprint Mui Mui Records it seemed like a no brainer to invite American artist and family friend John Manhard back for another bite of the cherry. The result is a four tracker that really hits home the smooth, yet techy, soulful, but full of energy slant to house music that is quickly becoming the calling card of Mui Mui Records.

Epitomising this unique style is A1 banger “Jazz Funk Sex” and Manhard is on sizzling form from the first beat. The ramped tempo sits especially well here as the track’s subtleties really make the track pop. From the backwards kicks, minute drifts in the repeating piano riff, what is a fairly minimal track has been turned out to an absolute bomb.

Turning over to A2 and “Where’s the Szechaun” brings together swirling pads, popping slap bass licks with more jazzy guitar notes that really make full use of the repeating vocal snips. Flipping over and “Tickle My Pickle” hits slightly different with a gnarly warped synth line that also nicely uses choped vocal samples but works these into an outrageous break in the track that is like an updated, extended excerpt from a Jesse Rose banger. Rounding out the third in the Mui Mui series is another tidy jazz fueled workout in “Party Time” and that is exactly what is on the cards when this EP gets amped up.

MUIMUI003 is now available on pre-sale via Ba Dum Tish and Bandcamp ahead of full release on 11th August.

To celebrate the release and the label’s second birthday, joining label head E. Alexander at Starlane Pizza Bar on Sunday, August 6th will be a very impressive cast of rising selectors. Timing is everything with these parties John Manhard just happens to be in town for this special occasion, as will Trixie, Sel & C, Chris G, and there will also be two special guest with close ties to Snoozin’ B.
