MLM Aka MaxLaMenace presents the next explorative V/A for his label La Menace Records.
Since inception in 2018, the Paris based collective have shaped an intruiging, versatile personality. Extended digital releases span a variety of moods, from downtempo, trip hop and ambient tips; to groovy, acid-tinged flavours.
The label’s founder returns in their third release with a playful, garagey bomb. Featuring alongside Djebali, Max Cohle, Sisscok and Soufflé Caramel, moods meander through tasteful winks of house, garage and more experimental downtempo fusions.
‘La Mont Joie’ is frothing with energy in MLM’s slick contribution. Snappy percussion fizzes around a spicy bassline destined to get the floor moving. Elements steadily grow into the mix, building tension with lush, shimmering chords washing over the acid-tinged beats.
Atomspheres head towards a warm, ethereal direction in the track’s climactic breakdown. Percussion parts way for a stunning pad sequence glossing over the mix, creating an appreciative, hands-on-heads moment, before darting back into the sharp, fiery rhythms.
Moods intersect at a satisfying, sonic-like equilibrium at various points throughout. Blending the percussion’s buoyant bounce with a more submissive, spirited atmosphere coming from the track’s melodic elements. It’s the sign of a producer at the top of their game, which is evidenced by MLM and his label’s prolific output.
Max Cohle contributes two cuts to the release, exploring dubby, atmospheric realms with a gentle charm; whilst Sisscok and Djebali bring the dance floor heat. Sisscok explores a stunning vocal piece, remnant of Dixon’s atmospheric Innervisions imprint; whilst The Frenchman wraps a nasty bassline over neat breaks and a sultry, piano-driven energy.
Frequent face of the label Soufflé Caramel conludes the EP with a breathaking 10 minute piece. Adding further depth to this already versatile curation, the French producer casts a delightfully hypnotising energy in ‘La fabuleuse histoire du porc halal’.
Huge bass notes narrate this immersive, long form composition concluding this educative EP. Elements gradually begin to make sense throughout a patient build up, littering subtle melodies and bleeps over a tight broken beat.
