Raw Senses return for their second edition and the self penned productions double down on their previously very well received debut.
We kick off our review at the very top of the release with “Tenebris Instrumentum” and as the project name implies the core elements are raw but perfectly arranged for maximum impact. Rolling out with thunderous kicks and course hi-hats which are a mainstay throughout, but it’s when the icy dub synth stabs insert themselves into the action when the vibe takes a turn. Regardless of the numerous elements that are added into the mix the mix retains the raw energy, impressive clarity, and infectious energy.
Moving on to “Tribus Instrumenti” and the high octane energy is retained and if anything is dialed up further. The rolling percussion is most definitely a calling cardiff this release as the conga and repeating hats keep the focus on the tribal groove while the appearance of a hypnotic synth provides a perfect mix point to further build on what has been come before and what to come next.
“Crus Instrumentum” continues in the same hard groove vein as before but with a much more housier vibe than previously. The synth stabs are straightforward in the early stages but are soon twisted and shifted into place. Short vocal cuts enhance the peak time mood further alongside some very smart drops with the aid of a shimmering string pad that fades in and out to help build the intensity before dropping away to reveal the robust groove.
Finally we have “Reflexus Instrumenti” and while the rest of the EP is a masterclass in tough grooves designed to pummel the floor, the closing to the release takes thighs down a notch. Without losing the sound from previous parts of the EP, this takes its time to land the listener at a less frantic conclusion. As with previous tracks the blown bass tones and thudding grooves are still there, but with a little more care to offer something slightly different to the rest.
