Trommel.224 – Nicola Cruz

Being French-born, but now based in Ecuador, it would seem that Nicola Cruz has the perfect mix of influences on his sound. Fair enough, he did move to Ecuador when he was only three, but as a result of the many musical mixes he has been exposed to in his early life, he has a truly unique sound of his own. Nicola has an unwavering thirst for grooves of all shapes and sizes, and these can be easily noted via his many releases for the likes of fabric, Rhythm Section, Mult Culti, and his stunning downtempo longplayer for Nous’klaer Audio.

As well as his more diverse selection of beats, Nicola Cruz also has an ear for crafting more dancefloor-focused cuts. These club-oriented bombs, while still bursting with forward-thinking electronics, have found their way to the most established of platforms, such as DJ Masda’s Cabaret Recordings as well as The MUDD Show stream series.

We are understandably extremely happy to be welcoming Nicola Cruz to our podcast series as his stature and sonic mastery continue to grow. While Nicola is regularly called upon to provide live electronics for esteemed events such as MUTEK and Gottwood Festival, we find Cruz in peak DJ mode.

Cruising into the early sections of our newest mix edition, it is not long until we are up to speed and Cruz offloads synth-laden bomb after gritty synth-laden bomb. Having retained the sonic intricacies of his earlier work, each layer is added to the next before it is all peeled away to reveal a sheer groove. The result is perhaps the most intense and drama-filled mix that we have presented. Either way, this edition from Nicola Cruz is most assuredly one for the books.
