Few artists have quite as many years between them as the two minds behind DJ / improv duo Flabbergast. These years of which we speak coincidentally came before they decided to mint their joint moniker. Vincent Lemieux and Guillaume Couto-Dumont have long been creative sparring partners and with their solo output already set in the electronic music folklore it is hardly surprising that their joint work is as hard to pin down as it is to fathom how it is produced. With releases on Adam’s Bite, Yoyaku, the first fateful Circus Company outing, and of course, their own Copier/Coller imprint the sweet spot between a DJ set and live performance is seldom found.
For our next podcast edition, we have yet another highlight in the series and it comes live and direct from one of the homes of Berlin minimal – Club der Visionaere. On a humid May Sunday night, Flabbergast took to the decks (and assembled hardware) to prove that some things just can’t be planned for. Over the next hour plus Vincent and Guillaume meld all manner of moods and sounds together to produce absolute magic out on the CDV decking. Bleepy techno, crispy minimal, and percussive tools all vie for their space by the Spree but it is the x-factor element where Flabbergast flourish. Detuned piano licks, brass hits that easily recall the spirit of carnival, and all the flare associated with the Rio celebration.
