The mountain valley of Chongli plays home to YOUSHAN as it finds its spot nestled in the hills 2000m above sea level, where YOUSHAN offers a retreat for the senses and the soul. Capitalising on the remarkable settings that nature offers, they aim to foster a culture that promotes openness, imagination and self-liberation through sound and shared experience – as any good party should! This promise sounds an easy one to fulfil when you take a look at some of the artists they have selected across the 3 days. Boutique electronic sounds from dub-techno and electro to minimal and breakbeat, they have it all checked as over 40 artists take to the stage, comprising a healthy combination of international artists and some of China’s finest.
With a focal point on sound and merging it with the scenery from sunrise to sunset and the times in between, it comes as little surprise to hear the likes of Andrey Pushkarev, Dana Ruh and SIT (Vlad Caia & Cristi Cons) have been called upon to do their thing in providing some of the most sublime soundtracking in such a beautiful location. With this ethos in mind and these international artists alone considered, it suggests a wealth of native artist may well have been selected and curated in similar fashion.
Dub techno and deep house don Mr. Pushkarev, super-stylish selector, producer and Brouqade boss Dana Ruh and several other international artists join Romanian minimal techno luminary duo SIT as they take to the valley. Answer Code Request brings intricate breaks and bass-heavy techno as he flies the Ostgut Ton flag. Organik Festival founder and Smoke Machine collective leader Diskonnected brings his musical chameleon selection style that has seen him play the likes of Robert Johnson, Berghain and more.
DOTT and Sarayu bring minimal and other fine sounds as the pair behind Thailand’s More Rice label and record store bring gems from the fruits of their labour and further afield. Slept-on veteran and sonic pioneer, Kuniyuki brings his blissful blend of natural elements, infectious rhythms and subtle synthesis as the Japanese artist performs a live set for YOUSHAN. Klasse Wrecks co-runner Mr. Ho, brings bombs from his own artillery, some of which on the likes of Cabaret Recordings, and others alongside label co-head honcho Luca Lozano as well as old and new sounds amassed in his collection over the years, spanning house and techno, electro, breakbeat and more.
French export now based in Vietnam, Ouissam has spent the last ten years out that way, making waves wherever he sets down his roots. His intuitive and elegant approach to music has allowed him to find his feet and tap into the very soul of the scene as he runs Snug at Savage, Cliché records out of Hong Kong, bringing his fusion of house disco and techno. Co-founder of Siamese Twins Records, and DJ/Producer, Sunju Hargun, has forged his sound with a retrospective glance as he revels in the psychedelic goodness of the techno, deep trance and ambient type genres as he amalgamates them under one big blanket of hypnotic electronic charm.
Selected in tandem with the above array is a serious curation of some of China’s most exciting sonic artists, selectors and party starters. Hailing from Nanjing, vinyl addict and Disc Chef founder, 2Difficult shows his sounds as he finds the balance between the beauty of acoustic instruments and the power of polymorphic 4/4 structures. Beijing-based electronic duo Nighticket perform live as they combine elements from progressive house, synth pop and more. Genki music festival organiser, SWING CAT label owner and Shanghai’s HEIM club co-founder Jeff Chong is also welcomed to the fold, selecting deep and jazzy cuts across genres. Setting the Beijing rave community alight, saferoom resident DJ Skögul selects hi-energy goods across genres and influences she keeps it bouncing.
