Canadian vinyl imprint VRNT keep the quality coming with three trippy originals from Dubfound and top remix work from ever-impressive French duo Zendid.
Following a string of super tasty and original releases, this next outing from Dubfound marks the 7th slice of wax from VRNT. Moldovan minimal techno maestro Dubfound is back with another thoughtfully crafted output, known for his combinations of cool sound design, lazy grooves and more, this time round does not miss as he follows suite in his “Cocooz” EP.
On the flip, “Low” paints prettier pictures of an oasis in the ether, harmonic sweetness meets machine-funk as this one cruises through dark tides, travelling under starlight as twinkling and swirling synths light the path ahead. Whispering vocals slur and blur throughout as they tickle the brain, hypnotic, heartfelt goodness right here.
Zendid cut through the murky waters in their iteration of “Low” as the pair bring the energy, putting pedal basses to the metal as their interpretation breathes sweetly across a spacious structure, whilst motifs from the original are re-heard through kaleidoscopic FX processing, alongside cheeky drum fills that rear their head every now and then. Another quality flip from the Frenchmen, no surprise there of course!
Title track “Cocooz” kicks things off side A with spooked-out vocals and playful themes that intertwine as basslines plod through as the track takes a warm journey through the familiar and the straight-up unknown, opposing emotions compounded under a cleverly structured piece.
A2.’s “Feef” brings it up a notch as the vocal carries unrelenting uncertainty that pushes forth and really makes itself heard over no-nonsense stripped back lines that undulate between percussion and bass as Dubfound flexes his synthesis skills taking us down a mind-bending route, tweaky, after-hours material for sure!
Stay tuned for more from them in times to come, no doubt sooner than later as the prolific VRNT are already seeing out release number seven since 2021. What’s more, VRLTD008 is just around the corner and hears two more greats on board as they welcome Guy From Downstairs and Cabanne to the label for the next outing.
