DJ Hermano is next up on the Montreal label Seer Record Co. Stepping into their second release, the Canadian imprint continues to establish their take on contemporary club music. Weird, intelligent and driving in all the right places, it’s a unique acid-tinged strain of house-meets-techno-meets-electro. Flexing a frivolous charm with playful percussions and comical vocal samples that sound like they’ve been ripped from some kind of TV show, the music coming from this label is a refreshing listen.
We look deeper at the A2’s ‘Discodrama’, a zippy housey number that gets a ‘Kodemul’s Rub’ treatment. It’s exactly the kind of mind-warping material you might expect to hear whipping around Berlin’s Hoppetosse at 10am. Deep and mystical whilst maintaining a strong sense of playfulness. Rhythms are sharp and nimble, working a driving hi-hat with slick claps and a short, punchy kick drum that would definitely pop on the right sound system.
The first release from this exciting label saw a more house-leaning palate with five tracks stretching across a sun-kissed vibe that feels much more Canadian, or at least somewhere with a warmer climate than Berlin’s frosty mornings at present. There’s a clear influence from Europe’s throbbing community of music producers in this corner of vinyl-driven, audiophile-obsessive cultures, without losing sight of its Canadian roots. The original ‘Discodrama’ meanders down a much more vibrant and eclectic tip with strange broken beats and a stronger presence of vocals.
Flipping over to the B-side, the energy takes a welcome dive into deeper, more hypnotic territory. B1 sees DJ Hermano team up with OJPB for a hazy, synth-soaked excursion that feels like it’s been lifted straight out of a dream sequence. With its warm pads and rolling groove, it’s an essential sundown selection, built for the early evening hours of an open-air party,.B2 seals the deal with CDMX’s finest, Soos, steering things into late-night territory. There’s an undeniable sensuality to it, the kind of track that slowly unfurls and wraps itself around you, locking you into its trance-like pulse.
If the A-side leans into the more playful, body-moving aspects of the dancefloor, then the B-side feels like the smoke-filled, eyes-closed moment of blissful introspection.Seer Record Co. has truly carved out something special with their second outing—an EP that captures the magic of both peak-time madness and deep, meditative bliss, all pressed into one essential 12 inch.
