South Korean artist DJ Bowlcut now adds to “Bowl-Air”, his self-created fictional (possibly) universe, by way of his new label Principauté de Bowl-Air. Referring to a principality hidden within Seoul, “Bowl-Air” will be home to all the sonic creations from the mind of DJ Bowlcut, aka Prince of Bowl-Air. For the first outing on this new imprint, we look at 2 original cuts from the man himself backed by remixes from DOTT and Rudolf C.
We firslty take aim at the second of DJ Bowlcut’s original tracks – “The Moment”. The stripped back groove is more than enough to get the track under way, but it is the super low bass tones that really grab the attention when they bellow into view. They are soon joined by glitchy percussion and an accompanying bassline that unseat the micro fabric of Bowl-Air.
Over on B2, Rudolf C is in charge of reimagining this bass-fueled monster, and he does a great job. He injects even more energy into his version, using parts from the vocoded vocal samples and the flanged out percussion, he turns this into a peaktime robotic heater.
Flipping back over to A1 and we find the original mix of “Tibetan Bowl”, and there is even more moody bass adventures to be had. True to the title of the track, there is a hypnotic repeating bell motif that circles the track and the crunchy metallic percussion. It is not long before DJ Bowlcut’s trademark deep behemoth bassline takes hold of the track and pushes its footprint to gargantuan effect. Rounding out this very tidy package is our friend from Thailand DOTT who is on stunning form with his “Undercut Mix” of “Tibetan Bowl”. Dialling back the bassline a tad he is able to focus the lower frequencies around the kick, which for the larger part, gives ample room for the true nature of the bells to shine through. The results are equally as hypnotising as the original version, just with a different flavour.
