Premiere: A1 – Wink – Tatiana [HLX002]

Melbourne-born, London-based vinyl outfit Helix Discs hit back with a tasty second release after a solid starter from Berlin-based Locky Mazzucchelli that heard four quality originals blend sounds from minimal, tech house and more.

Four well-crafted, dance-floor-driven bits from London-based Wink, with this release on Helix Discs marking his first vinyl release with his tunes exclusively, fresh off the back of 2 tunes across 2 records on InTheBagg and more recently a feature on Truly Madly’s Mindhelmet series.

With the EP entitled “Writing records entertains nobody” Wink indulges in the usage of the sardonic tone, as the four-tracker packs energetic, groove-laden floor fillers that will be sure to keep heads rocking and feet moving all hours of the night. Animate from the off, as heard in A1’s “Tatiana”, which sees the best of old school, electro and breakbeat reimagined for the contemporary listener. Sparkling, playful themes hear themselves digitised as Wink compounds them with detuned and downright dirty vibes, as “Tatiana” flirts with themes from old school, deep house and electro. Soft sounds offer waves of harmony in a kind of call and answer fashion as grooves pluck and pop as they rock the boat.

A2. Amps it up a notch as “Dancing” plays on classic themes with introspective harmonies, infectious arps and reassuring vocals all alluding to those post-midnight twilit moments. Tasteful, techy and heartfelt business to round off the A-side.

On the flip, things continue in similar fashion as “Don’t Stop” does exactly that, with the whole track housed around a bass line that is as addictive as it is cheeky. Whilst there are casual verbal reminders to continue tannoyed throughout the track, I’m sure they may only be directed at that 3% of any dance floor who have chucked the bucket too soon, the bass hook alone will have the present and sane 97% at the mercy of the DJ, unable to stop! B2.’s “Slick Rick” Ties things up nicely with a variety of UFO-type tones, bubbly bass and skippy percussion, with the track gliding between elements, punctuated by stabs, smooth samples and more.

Two serious outputs from the Australian vinyl heads, it’s well worth keeping tabs on Helix Discs and with production limited to 250 with no repress, we recommend pulling the trigger sooner than later on this one, 40 winks go by quick, do not sleep!
