Smev delivers a masterclass in cosmic sound design with his latest EP, ‘5th Dimension’ for X2SEE, a label run by the London and Berlin-based vinyl distribution, Lirica Archives. As the label’s fourth output, this ethereal five-tracker adds to their diverse and mind-bending sounds which have arrived thus far from the likes of A:G and Carriego.
Smev’s classy production efforts have surfaced on the likes of Voigtmann’s Subsequent label, as well as Maai Records, showcasing an interestingly nostalgic vibe. Old-school, machine-driven methods are front and centre with snappy drum machine beats and classic synth lines zinging over the rhythms.
His next EP weaves between tempos and textures whilst maintaining a classy UK attitude across this five tracker. Whether it’s DJ Masda, Binh or Z@p, you can imagine this one sliding effortlessly into the sets of selectors invested in the more cosmic realms.
We zoom into B1’s ‘Sweet Destruction’, a menacing workout that might be the most fierce of the five. Nimble drum machine beats set the stage with rolling 707-like drums and shimmering pads setting a surrealist scene overhead. Sound design is crisp and clean, whilst still achieving a vast, immersive vibe. There’s enough space between the layers to let each element breathe, giving the track a satisfying balance of movement and mood.
Lirica Archives stocks the likes of Opia, Orbital London and NorthSouth Records, distributing a diverse palate of wax across Europe, and this release fits right in. ‘Nu Era’ and ‘Tip of The Iceberg’ bring a peak time flair to the A side, flexing slick breaks and trippy vocoder vocals that are sure to see plenty of play time.
Due to a high amount of demos sent to Lirica Archives, the X2SEE record label was launched to help artists develop their vision and release music.
