Premiere: B1 – Big Surge – Project AA [MW004]

For their fourth release, London-based label Moonworks dust off a true gem from the golden era of UK house. Originally produced in 1995 by Paul Kelly, Andrew Grimwood, and John Viney in a modest North London studio, the record has long lingered in the shadows of collector circles, whispered about as one of those elusive cuts that never quite got its due.

True to Moonworks’ ethos, the label worked directly with the original trio to remaster the tracks from source material and refresh the artwork, restoring the release to its full, radiant form. The result is a lovingly curated revival of mid-’90s UK house energy. Early support on the release comes from the likes of Raresh, Ben UFO, Alex Kassian, Hamish & Toby, Chris Stussy, Dr. Banana, NIKS, Carista, Enzo Siragusa and more renowned international DJs.

Our premiered track, “Project AA” on side B1, opens with vocoder-tinged vocals riding over a progressive rhythm and a synth-driven bassline. The continuous low-end pulse builds tension, eventually resolving into a waterfall of classic house chords, a moment of pure release that feels as satisfying now as it must have at its peak three decades ago.

Flipping back to side A, “Project A” lays down a spacey groove underpinned by crisp house percussion and airy keys. The track captures that timeless London’s 90’s charm, understated yet irresistibly groovy.

Adding a contemporary twist, Kyiv-born producer Nizar Sarakbi contributes a sleek edit of “Project A”, preserving the original’s essence while tightening its contours for the modern floor. Stripped-down and slightly more punchy, it bridges generations of house head, a courteous update to a cult favorite.

“Big Surge” EP will be officially released on October 17th and until then the digital release can be pre-ordered here, and the vinyl release over here.
