Premiere: A3 – Stekke – Spaced Out Sound [CREMA001]

CREMA001

Brazilian production duo Stekke step up as label residents for the new imprint Crema Recordings.

The pair have been a prolific presence across the minimal market both on home turf and across the Berlin circuit for many years. Many sought after releases from their imprint Sketches Records have contributed to shaping the club music landscape, crafting sultry, refined beats loaded with feeling.

Crema Recordings’ new venture welcomes five fresh cuts from the duo, furthering their explorations into warm, analogue textured compositions spread across the record.

‘Spaced Out Sound’ feels like the secret weapon of the release. Tucked away on the A3, the featured cut shares an insight into what sounds like the fruits of an extended jam session in the duo’s studio.

Pulsating sub notes bring a strong core to the track, flooding the track with warmth whilst delicate hats trickle overhead. The mood is pensive, walking through tense melodies and a thick, full kick drum slotting into the mix on every off-beat.

Heavy, metallic chords morph over the mix with a fluttering intensity leaving much for interpretation in this analogue workout. It’s the most laid back, experimental leaning cut from the release. The kind of devious DJ tool you might hear the likes of Ricardo or Rhadoo slip into the mix, either building or releasing tension deep into a steamy club set.

Channeling their passions for analogue equipment and production methods, the duo have also put together a variety of sample packs recorded from a number of their go to synthesthisers and drum machines. These are available to purchase over on Bandcamp.

The rest of the A-side sees Stekke flexing their more playful, peak time energies in the two versions of ‘Phunky, Dance’. Aesthetics remain within the dusty world of analogue warmth, shaping spitty hats around chuggy basslines and trippy vocal work.

‘Elements’ and ‘Root Keys’ pick up the pace on the B-side with two lush pressure builders. The former laces a sleazy, muted sub underneath quirky hats, whilst ‘Root Keys’ throws a fierce kick drum over swampy chords; gasping to be heard through a club system.
