There’s putting your own stamp on something and there’s actually putting your own stamp on something. Braintree based artist Joolmad has gone and done exactly that with his latest project STAMPO. A record label that recognises the creative flair of the artist at work with a most simple and yet unique concept. Supporting the name behind the production with a big shiny stamp of said name, set proudly onto the record for all and everyone to see.
And who better to kickstart the series than Joolmad himself? An emerging artist who sees support from the likes of tINI with his trippy, loopy grooves. Glaring in red, the very first stamp marks his own Dominatrix EP, with four tracks that twist and turn through fuzzy corners of punchy minimal and house.
‘Don’t Ask Me’ is a sonic journey that drives deep into the depths. Thumping sub leads the charge, as the subtle, melody-driven bassline is enveloped in smatterings of acid. Each layer leads to the otherworldly. Soft-filtered mutterings offer a mysterious texture that becomes all the more intriguing as the conversation continues.
Smooth, inviting vocal carves a warm contrast, whilst percussion dances a steady, marching rhythm, punctuated by sharp snare rattles. Trip inducing, this is a track that captures the mind alongside a cheeky playfulness which finalises the blend. It’s the deep little chugger of the EP, sitting craftily next to darker sounds of the title track, the booming energy of the opener and a hypnotic roll in the close.
