Now on to their fourth edition, Wrong’uns have carved out a great corner of the UK sound community for themselves. As label head Mehlor says, “playing the wrong music to the right people”, and his four-track bumping EP comes correct with a clutch of peak-time garage bangers.
Kicking off this wicked twelve is Mehlor and “No Turning Back”. Garage grooves thunder into view, aided by a vintage synth stabs, falling toms, and a finely curated collection of well-known sonic samples. The muscular rhythms are further backed up by a scything synth that acts as an electro shock to the dancefloor. “Stranger Danger” completes side A with a further exploration of the pitched-down synth work, and while the outrageous synths and basslines hint at something dastardly, the key stabs lighten the mood just enough to work in most situations.
Flipping over and side B is just as dangerous. “I Can Feel It” is a testament to this mood. Skippy grooves stay true to the garage roots of the label with more disgustingly satisfying basslines, but it is the addition of the sublime filtered keys that has always been a beautiful trademark of garage and house music of the era. Not slowing down one bit, Mehlor steams into the last track on the EP with “Death By Lazer”, and the riddims and heavy bass tones come thick and fast. Featuring excellent drum programming throughout, but most of all on this last track, sunkissed terraces this summer won’t know what hit them.
