Rooftop Cardigans are back with a bang for their fifth release. The record label and art movement have been steadily supporting the sounds of house music over the years. Born in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic and now based across New York and London, the collective has up to this point brought talented artists to the spotlight. It’s been a quiet couple of years on the release front. However, the next artist to feature needs little help to shine. V.I.C.A.R.I. aka Tommy Vicari Jnr serves up five originals on Destiny EP.
The Sheffield producer has put his name to plenty of platforms in the last decade and beyond. Labels the likes of Robsoul Recordings, Albion Records, Politics of Dancing, Cabinet Records, Outright Records and Cartulis Music have all born his fruits. Rooftop Cardigans have not been without their own projects, but this one might be their biggest.
We’ve taken the title track for the premiere. A funk-fuelled house bomb, ‘Destiny’ comes with good vibes and fine grooves throughout. The bassline is full, primed with a chugging beat and laced with a subtle melody. Fun, frolicking strings dance delicately over the rhythm, set sharply by a slightly off-beat percussion.
It’s organic in sound, lifted by heftier synth packing that bit more punch. Darker scores breathe a more determined disposition, but the elements combine to make a nice blended warmth. Enough to place you at the party, enjoying a good old dance and a pleasant bit of sunshine. This one is all about the niceties.
Buy the EP on Bandcamp, available for pre-order now before the release on Friday.
