Puerto Rican imprint Fast Lane have been pushing out and supporting underground house and techno for some time. Over the years their Solstice Podcast has hosted the likes of Nicolas Duvoisin, Aman, Nils Weimann and Carlos Rivera – the artist in charge. This year podcast series turned to record label, with both Duvoisin and Mihai Pol featuring on the first release. And the momentum hasn’t stopped. The fourth release is about to drop and it comes from Argentinian artist Xuacu.
No stranger to the world of production, Xuacu has put forward a steady stream of originals alongside classic interpretations. Minimalistic reworks of Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrops’ and Radiohead’s ‘Morning Mr. Magpie’ sit firmly at the fore. His latest exploration comes on Fast Lane, in the form of ‘SR Stories’ EP.
Drum led intro announces the start of the story in ‘SR18’. Groove feeds in gently through a purring bassline, sitting softly under the pattering of percussion that maintains. Synth trickles steadily around a buoyant vocal, leaving a chilled yet cheerful movement in its stride.
This bobbing nonchalance grows into a more determined strut as the layers becomes more defined. Percussive pattern comes further to the fore, leaving the melodies with more resolve. The shift is captivating and more for the journey. The balance here is right, merging leisurely listening with the opportunity for dance.
‘SR32’ hits that bit harder, fuelled by heavy hitting bassline and whirring synth-led groove. Softness remains in tact however, floating even as the power drives home.
The EP features remixes from Mike.D and Michael Rosa and can be found at Bandcamp.
