A fresh imprint is emerging from the White Isle and its name is Monkey Records. At the helm is Mau BB, the creative force behind the label. Stepping up with to launch its first release, with a strong remix package in toe.
‘Runnin’ brings together a blend of flavours contrasting influences that find a sweet spot between the subtle grooves of minimal and the infectious energy of hip hop. A thread of nostalgia runs through it, remembering those lush beats from back in the day, reinvigorated with crisp electronic textures.
The remix package pushes the narrative in different directions. First up is Angel Mellado who turns in a crisp and lowly slung interpretation. DJ Sandwich then delivers the take as smooth as you like, with soft pads bringing a tickle of warmth throughout and a soul injection that emanates throughout. The melodies are driving this one, softer in nature, matching a toned down vocal.
FRAXA steers a more serious route. Deeper tones succumb in this one, hypnotic and leading into the trip, while rolling rhythms of Rominimal dominate the brain. Angel Mellado’s take brings a bouncing, house infusion. Layering a rounded bassline with snapping percussion and hints of electro through a slick, pointed beat.
Runnin’ EP tells one story through multiple perspectives, each remix bringing a unique flavour that captures another angle. It’s not often that interest remains peaked, from one remix to the next. Monkey Records have gone and done it, showcasing the diverse voices within its community, right from the beginning.
