Premiere: 1 – Abraham, Boutiq.808, Tom Marvin – Only One [SSS014]

The trio of producers Abraham, Boutiq.808, and Tom Marvin join forces for a dynamic and refined tech-house EP, ‘The Future’. Packed with playful vocoder work and a lean percussive palette, the release finds a fitting home on Eindhoven-based label Suspense, which continues to build its prolific catalog. Now reaching its 14th Bandcamp release, the label has solidified itself as a tastemaker, championing a sleek, minimal-inspired sound that balances elegance with club functionality. We recently featured Lepaya’s contribution to the label back in December.

The EP opens with ‘Only One’, a sleazy, garage-tinged number that brims with energy. Whirling synths and a fidgety bassline bring an urgent yet effortlessly cool groove, tailor-made for a peak-time club moment. On remix duties, Dimitri Monev takes Only One into darker, dubbier territory. His version flexes a brooding low-end, neatly threaded with acid squelches and stabby synth work, reminiscent of the pioneering FUSE London aesthetic. The contrast between the original and the remix highlights the track’s versatility, making it a standout moment on the release.

Next up, Abraham & Boutiq.808 link up for ‘Sky Drop’, an innocent organ bomb with an uplifting charm. Lush keys dance over featherlight percussion, exuding a warm, open-air quality that feels tailor-made for sun-drenched dance floors. A gentle groove underpins the track, allowing space for each element to breathe, creating a hypnotic, blissful atmosphere that lingers long after the beats.

Closing out the EP, Boutiq.808 goes solo on the title track, ‘The Future’. Here, introspection takes centre stage, as nimble beats glide through a bubbling array of off-kilter melodies. A deeper, more meditative affair, it showcases a different side to the trio’s collective vision. The track’s delicate synth work and subtle rhythmic variations invite listeners into a more immersive, almost dream-state, rounding off the EP with a sense of sophistication.

Suspense has long been synonymous with quality sound, refining the groovy rhythms of house with the darker edges of techno. The label’s commitment to sleek, minimal club music continues to break stigmas, elevating the underground with a fresh and elegant approach. This EP is a testament to this ethos – four cuts that balance class and groove with effortless precision, offering both dance floor-ready energy and deeper, more nuanced moments for the discerning listener.
