Malika: Storytelling In Sound

Malika is an artist whose connection to electronic music has always been rooted in emotion, curiosity and a deep sense of purpose. Across DJing, production and music supervision, she balances personal creativity with projects that amplify the work of others. Whether she’s behind the decks or curating sound for audiovisual projects, her approach remains grounded in intuition, with a commitment to authenticity.

Her first real connection to electronic music came thanks to a gift from her mother. “It was Röyksopp’s Melody A.M. I remember playing the album on repeat, not fully understanding what I was hearing, but completely captivated by it. It felt both emotional and out of this world at the same time.” That early encounter back in 2005 planted the seed for a lifelong exploration of electronic music, one that would eventually lead her to perform at clubs, festivals and intimate DIY parties. It was a love for the emotional feels of sound that would shape the way she approaches her craft today.

For Malika, milestones in her career have never been defined solely by fame or recognition, but by her own experiences. “Honestly, I still feel like I’m just getting started. I don’t measure my career by milestones but by the skills and understanding I keep adding, and there’s still so much to learn.” Playing stages at iconic festivals like Glastonbury, Dimensions and Dekmantel Selectors offered confidence building and excitement, but it was moments at smaller, unexpected gatherings, like a DIY party by a highway in Gran Canaria, that reminded her of why she was there in the first place. “Those moments felt like the real turning points to me…to connect, to let go, to share something real.”

Outside of the DJ booth, Malika channels her expertise into her role as Director of Music Supervision at Too Young Ltd, where she oversees the music and audio for a wide range of audiovisual projects, mostly in fashion. Her work spans from creative curation and sound design to the technicalities of securing music rights, but at its core, it is about amplifying the work of artists. “What I love most is putting forward artists I genuinely believe in and finding the perfect match between their music and a project. A single placement can sometimes have a real impact on an artist’s career, which makes it very rewarding beyond the creative result.”

Her approach in music supervision is distinct from DJing and although they aren’t directly complementary, Malika tells us they do share the same foundations: curation, intuition and emotion. “Selecting music for films or fashion is about channeling a collective vision or the one of a Director, through your musical sensibility and culture. It’s less about self expression and more about understanding what the project really needs to emotionally connect and elevate visuals. With DJing, it’s more personal and about connecting with people live on emotions.” In both contexts, she is guided by the emotional resonance of sound, whether crafting the sonic mood for a scene or shaping the energy of a dance floor.

Balancing multiple creative paths is not without its challenges. Malika has learned over the years to be selective with her commitments, prioritising projects that align fully with her vision and values. “People often say you can only be good at one thing, but I don’t like that idea. I love working with sound in different forms and even beyond that, I’m drawn to exploring different disciplines. But you can’t be everywhere at once. Right now, I’m more focused on certain areas, but in a few months I might shift toward production again.” Her strategy is rooted in patience, self-awareness and respecting her own limits, which allows her to sustain creativity without burning out. That said, she admits there is no secret formula. “Over time I’ve had to become much more selective with gigs and only do what I feel 100% aligned with. I try to move at my own rhythm, but I’m still learning. I have ideas and projects I’d love to explore with sound in the future, I’m just not in a rush.”

Looking ahead, Malika sees her journey as an ongoing process of balance and exploration. “I thought I was moving with intention, but even then recently I’ve hit a point where I was forced to slow down.” She has embraced this slower, more intentional approach to her career, focusing on projects that feel honest and meaningful. “I’m focused on finding balance again, letting things unfold without pressure. I think that space will lead me somewhere new, somewhere right for me, so let’s see! Whatever comes out of that, I trust it’ll be the right direction.” This mindset allows her creativity to flow naturally, whether in production, DJing, or curating sound in other spaces.

Her work in audiovisual curation has deepened her understanding of the power of music beyond the club. “I can be equally inspired by the emotional impact of music in a film scene as by a Moodymann set at Heideglühen,” she says, highlighting the ways in which different forms of musical engagement can influence her practice. By bridging the worlds of performance and supervision, Malika continues to expand her perspective on electronic music and its cultural significance.

Ultimately, Malika’s career is defined by authenticity, emotional resonance and a commitment to community. Whether behind the decks, in curation, or producing tracks, she remains focused on what first drew her to electronic music: the ability to connect, inspire and create spaces where people can share genuine experiences. It’s this dedication to both craft and connection that ensures her influence will continue to grow and that her contributions to the scene remain as meaningful as the music she plays.

Nearly two decades after her first encounters with electronic music, Malika continues to explore the infinite possibilities of sound, balancing her creative pursuits with intention from one project to the next.
