Urugyuan-born, now Barcelona-based, Nico Etorena is part of an exclusive but growing band of artists hailing from the stunning South American country. Having risen to prominence as part of the Phonteque family, Nico shares the digger ethos for all variants of house and techno and regularly opens up his record bag to the delight of the world’s dancers. With more than a passing favour for the more electro-tinged reincarnations, his label Overthink Records is a thriving hub for both his sonic creations and those of his close knit family members. The most recent release on his imprint came by way of the on-point split EP alongside fellow Urugyuan Elias Sternin.
Being based in Barcelona has more than opened up Nico’s catchment areas and has seen him perform on the regular in his adopted home city as well as making the short trip to many of Europe’s hotspots. With the backing of the Picnic artist team, this frequent flyer is poised to take off. This is not news to those who have been following his trajectory and he is the artist in charge of this week’s podcast. Being able to stitch together so many different sounds is a skill that Nico seems to have mastered. From the subdued opening minutes to the following breaks and electro heaters, each mix tells a new tale and there is never a lost opportunity to challenge and surprise.
