Tapioca bring the grooves with this next release, “I’ve Got The Funk EP [TP002]” lands on wax, and oh boy is it coming in hot! Featuring two smoking originals from two fiery producers in collaboration, Elijah Something and label head Nathan Alzon, as the pair make a mighty match, not to mention two tasty remixes from Monica Venturella and Wilba.
The EP comes complete with a funked-out sleeve and the lore to match as a Tapioca tale is told, painting the picture for our musical heroes and their sonic conquest held in deep within the grooves of the attached wax.
The A-side kicks off with ‘some of this’, high-octane cosmic funk in the form of “I’ve got the funk”. This heavy-duty piece of acid-laden grooviness is set to wreck some skulls for sure, tight drum machine programming meets tasteful automation and synthesis. Definitely one for peak time or a wild afterparty! Monica Venturella maintains the energy but takes it back a step in her remix and dials in some melodies with some superb synth work – she really does have the funk too!… is that a touch of the west side I hear?… Lovely stuff, I suspect we’ll be hearing this one a lot over the summer. Top work from the Italian artist.
Over to the flipside for ‘some of that’, the duo present “The Heat Don’t Stop” – a very appt title as the track rides atop a real deep rolling bassline, surfing through clouds of vocal samples, modulating drums, FX scratches and more as the heat keeps coming! Quality, peaktime main stage energy again from Nathan Alzon and Elijah Something. Wilba heads west in his ‘loopaholic mix’ as he reimagines the original with tongue-in-cheek production techniques that ooze old school goodness – tapedeck style sampling, stripped-back structures and robust rhythms. Infectious, refreshing and retrosuperfuturistic. A certifiable banger that harnesses elements from UK techno, old school tech house and even further afield. Lovely work and a great number to finish out the EP.
Another top quality blend of tech house, electro and then some. Also, with the debut record from label head Nathan Alzon coming out last year, and more recently their Tapiocutz without borders fundraiser for Gaza, I’m super excited to hear the next chapter from Tapioca in times to come.
