Rising artist Xiaolin is currently working her way up through the fertile underground of Hong Kong. With a clutch of releases on Bless You as well as Polychrome Records, she exhibits a rare melding of technique from her roots as a musician and her many years spent collecting and playing records. This has stood her in good stead as her gig diary will attest, as she has recently appeared at Boiler Room Hong Kong, Rainbow Disco Club and 宀 Club and has upcoming gigs at Monument Festival and Transmissions From Hackney Festival.
Taking a slightly different, more introspective route for our next Free Download, Xiaolin takes us on an 11-minute downtempo trip. Glitchy electronics punctuate the conga-led rhythms, while punchy broken beats and undulating bass tones cut through the shroud of synths and fleeting mandolin appearances. Built for atmospheric chillout floors, purposeful warmup, or just an extended mind trip, Xiaolin demonstrates her dancefloor nous as well as her musical roots in one finely balanced package.
