Miami city guide: Randall M

Miami has always held a special place in my heart.  Even though I moved to Europe 7 years ago I have always come back and spent 3-4 months of the year here in the 305 (usually trading in Berlin’s brutal winter for Miami’s famous tropical weather and sunny beaches).
It’s the perfect American hub for me to be based and have easy access to North/South American gigs, close to my family, and just an all-around fun city full of different cultures.

I’ve selected 5 of my favourite places here for Trommel, check them out!

    Margaret Pace Park
I’ve always been in love with nature and sports since I was a little kid. For me, it’s important to balance the time spent in dark clubs and lonely studios, with the beauty of nature, exercise and the freedom of being outside. Margaret Pace Park is the perfect spot for me to go relax, clear my mind and also get a good workout. It’s situated right on the intercostal waterway in Miami and full of trees, grass fields and recreational courts. I usually meet friends here to play tennis, and basketball or go with my dog and girlfriend to just chill out and enjoy the scenery.

Un_Mute remains to be the driving force of the underground scene in Miami. I’ve had the pleasure of playing for these guys regularly now for the past 5 years and always look forward my set, whether it’s at Treehouse in South Beach or the legendary Electric Pickle in Wynwood. Headed by Benjamin Acero, the Un_mute team have brought countless DJ’s over for their Miami debuts; not afraid to take risks in order to provide the city with an arsenal of talented DJ’s, ranging from, RPR Soundsystem to Zip, Nicolas Lutz to Fumiya Tanka. 10 years in the game, they’re always paying close attention to sound and programming, and the parties create a quality, intimate atmosphere that is appealing to the DJ’s and ravers alike. The parties are weekly so if you’re in town, definitely check it out.

    La Pollita
Anyone that knows me, knows I’m quite the foodie.  Travelling all over, I’m always looking for new spots and the “best of this” and the “best of that”.  About 3 years ago I stumbled upon a little taco cart in Miami called “La Pollita” and knew I found something special.  Alex Meyer and Luci Giangrandi make (in my opinion) the best tacos in Miami. Specializing in Cali-Mexican food, they are making their tortillas fresh on the spot and use quite a few locally sourced products, giving their food a deliciously authentic taste.  They’re also two very friendly people, so I highly recommend stopping in and paying them a visit. They’re located in Jade Alley in the Miami Design District. Pro Tip: get the chicken sandwich too!!

    The Miami Record Fair
If you’re looking to find some rare jams and something fun to do, the Miami Record Fair happens every last Saturday of the month from noon to five. Possibly the only monthly record fair around. The event is organized by Miami’s own Brother Dan, head of Terrestrial Funk, a record label and online/mobile record store. Located in Wynwood, each month the fair welcomes a slew of South Florida record dealers as well as occasional international and out of state dealers boasting rarities. You can also DJ at The Miami Record Fair if you want, just find the curator of the fair, Brother Dan, early in the day and sign up for a slot on a first come first serve basis. The event is free and open to the public, it is dog-friendly and if you know Gramps, it offers some of the best drinks and pizza in town.

    Space Terrace
My list wouldn’t be complete without including the iconic Club Space in Miami, and to be more specific, the Terrace.  This is the place I was first introduced to house and techno music back in 2011. Fast forward 8 years and I now have the privilege to play here regularly and it’s definitely one of my favourite parties in the world.  It was taken over a few years ago by Davide Link and the Miami Rebels who have brought it to the next level by bringing in their own style and new sound system, along with their educated crowd who is happy to dance well into Sunday afternoon every week.  This allows DJs to deliver extended sets to a packed dance floor all day with the Miami sunrise mid-set, you can’t ask for much more. The team of Davide, Lucaz, Coloma and Johhny (along with the resident DJ’s) are some of the most talented and hospitable guys in the industry and couldn’t make us feel more at home when we are there either playing or just raving with friends. A definite don’t miss when you’re in Miami
