Premiere: A1. Henry Hyde – Perchin’ [DMF001 – Drifted Records]
After a brief hiatus, London based label Drifted is back with a fully loaded VA, launching their new ‘Mid-Flow Series’. The imprint first broke onto the scene in 2015 with a solo release from Tommy Vicari Jnr, that went down an absolute storm and went straight to the top of the charts on leading vinyl stores Decks, Deejay and Juno, selling out in a matter of days.
Although it has been many moons since the debut release, label head Charlie Dave Kent (formerly a resident for London based label and party Art of Dark) has used this time to piece together an outstanding 12″ double, consisting of 8 sublime tracks. The direction of the sound is geared towards more of a nu-electro and breakbeat style of music, all the time touching on the minimal side of techno of course. Other than the artist behind the premiere track, there is work from Canadian based producer Alicia Hush (Hushlamb), Lee Hume, Unai Trotti (Cartulis), Amathia, Bilal (NorthSouth), Voigtmann and Martinez. The artists involved all mould together perfectly for this VA, showcasing sounds that compliment each other, as well bringing their own signature styles to keep things varied, making each track its own chapter in this story.
For a London based label catering for ears yearning to hear breaky and electro sounding cuts, it makes perfect sense that the city’s very own Harry McCanna is the final piece of the puzzle. Over the years, Harry has carved out a place for himself in the scene and strikes us as someone who doesn’t conform or fit into whatever sound that is current. When playing, his sets can range through garage, breaks, house and electro, his selections often breaking boundaries with what you may ‘expect’ to hear. Whether at Half Baked, at The Lion & Lamb with the NorthSouth boys, or playing an afters in a secret location in London, Harry certainly delivers something special and unique.
In the world of production, another being comes into play – Henry Hyde. This is an alias that Harry took on when composing tracks a few years back, some of which made it onto his release with Undersound that featured a remix from Etienne, a record that is one of our favourites from the vault here at Trommel. Prior to this alter ego, Harry had released on UK label Fear Of Flying, as well as Loopdeville‘s Delooped Records. As his name changed so did the music slightly, this can be heard on following releases on Half Baked, Burbi and NorthSouth, as well as an upcoming release on Entity:London. A selection of breaky drum patterns tends to be a dead give away of his sound, accompanied by playful bass hits and effects that sporadically jump in and out of the mix. Plenty of funk and skip – which you are able to hear in the opening track for Drifted’s VA, entitled ‘Perchin”.
We are looking forward to seeing what both Drifted and McCanna have in store for us in the future..
